How to Measure for Window Coverings
Always take proper measurements of the width, height and depth of your window openings before making a buying decision. Also decide if you plan to mount your window treatment inside or outside the window casing.
Inside Mount
Width:
- Measure the inside width of the window frame at the top, middle and bottom (for vertical blinds, only measure the top)
- Record the narrowest width (do not make any deductions)
Height:
- Measure the inside height of the window frame at the left, middle and right
- Record the longest height to the nearest 1/8" (for verticals, use the shortest length)
If you want the blinds to not touch the window sill, deduct 1/4". If there is no sill, measure to where the blind is to reach.
Outside Mount
Width:
- Measure the outside width of the window frame
- Add at least 3" for overlap (8" for verticals)
- When deciding on width, consider how much overlap you need
Height:
- Measure from the sill to the position of the top of the shade
- If there is no sill, measure to where the blind is to reach
- Add at least 3" for overlap
For verticals, use the shortest length. Allow 3" above and below the window opening or moulding. For ceiling to floor, deduct 1/2" for carpet clearance.
Ideas & How-to
Blinds & Shades
Selecting the perfect window treatments for your home is an important part of creating a cohesive and stylish look. Whether you're looking for window blinds or shades, roller blinds for ease of use or even vertical blinds, there are many styles to choose from, each with their own unique look and feel. The right window coverings can help pull together the overall design of your home while also serving a functional purpose.
Window blinds and shades not only help block out sunlight, keeping your home cooler and reducing energy costs, but they also offer privacy by preventing outsiders from peering in. When it comes to choosing the right style for your windows, vertical blinds are an excellent option for larger or longer windows, while horizontal or Venetian blinds work best for shorter, smaller windows.
Blackout shades are a great choice for those who need a completely dark environment, making it easier to sleep soundly through the night. If you're looking for an affordable and fashionable option, roller blinds or roller shades made from one piece of fabric are a popular choice and come in a wide variety of patterns and designs to match any décor.
For a classic and elegant look, Roman shades are a great addition to your home décor. They can be raised or lowered by pulling a cord through rings sewn on the back of the fabric, and when raised, the fabric stacks in an even horizontal fold.
Finally, if you're looking for a modern and convenient option, motorized blinds and shades are a great choice. They can be controlled with the touch of a button, making it easy to raise and lower even the heaviest designs. With so many options, colours and styles to choose from, you're sure to find the perfect blinds or shades to suit your style and needs at The Home Depot Canada.
