Rated 2 out of 5 by from Astronomical timer does not work The programmable timer works well but the astronomical does not work. We bought two and tried programming the sunrise/sunset timers on both with the same results - the switch would turn the light off after one minute. I thought it was me and then I read another review with the same problem. We have used other programmable timed switches but wanted an astronomical timer so we wouldn't have to keep changing the time. There is another Home Depot programmable switch so this one is really all about the astronomical feature - since it doesn't work, it should be removed from the shelves. I don't want others to go through what we did only to find it doesn't work.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not a good timer When I purchased this timer there were 8 in the store. 6 of them had been opened and I assume were returned. I should have realized there was a problem with this timer. It is easy to set up on the manual settings but forget about the astronomical feature as it always defaults to off for the DST setting and does not allow a DST time setting as it is 1 hour off in DST time. I have programmed several wall timers before and there are better ones our there.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Horrible I had the old version of this timer switch and it was a 5 star product. This one is horrible in comparison. The programming is very confusing. It does'nt have an integrated dusk/dawn calendar like the older model. You cannot set this one, as an example, to turn on at dusk and turn off at a preset time. You could do it with the older one. I use these for my outside lights so I set them to turn on at dusk and turn off at 2:30AM. You cannot do it with this newer model. Defiant and Home Depot should go back to the old model. I have included a picture. On the left is the new model and on the right is the old model. What makes everything even worse is I could not return this horrible product because i did'nt have the original packaging. I literally spend close to $10,000 a year at home depot and I could'nt get $40 back for a poor product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Astro timer does not work This is a decent little timer but the astrological setting has me pulling my hair out, followed all the instructions and set it for my time and location and confirmed the sun rise and sunset times but it seems to have a mind of it's own it should be turning on at 9PM and off at 5AM, Instead it's turning on at 7PM and off at 2AM Not sure if I have a lemon or if it's just a bad product, the regular modes seem to work but if you want an astro timer for year round automation then buy something else.

I can get the astronomic feature to partially work if reset and leave DST set off. However, if in astronomic mode, and manually turn off and turn on - will always turn off when timer turns over next minute. Too bad - the programmable timer option seems to work well, but I specifically bought this for the astronomic feature...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Astronomical setting does not work! As others have said, Astronomical mode does not work. I programmed the Sunrise OFF / Sunset ON times as per the instructions, set the unit to Sunrise/Sunset mode, and the exterior house lights stay off after the programmed sunset time. If I turn it on manually after sunset, with the On/Off switch, it turns itself off after one minute. Very frustrating. It has one simple job and fails at it! It does work as a regular timer, but I bought it specifically for the sunset/sunrise feature.

After I finally set the timer to turn on at 7 p.m. and off at 11 p.m. for some reason the time had changed from a.m. to p.m. Finally I have reset it and it seems to come on at 7 p.m. but shuts off around 10.30. The unit does not seem to keep the time. Also where is the battery that is referred to in the installation instructions. My electrician could not find it.

Can these switches be programmed to turn on at dusk and off at 2 am or sometime during the night rather than off at sunrise?

I spoke with Southwire support today and they confirmed to me that the answer that was given to this question is incorrect. This timer can only be programmed to turn on at dusk and then turn off at dawn with the astronomic feature. Otherwise the ON/OFF times must be manually programmed in the Auto mode.

What is the maximum amount of wattage that this timer is capable of handling? How many lights can you control with this timer?

The max wattage would be 1875W Resistive/General, 1000W Tungsten. It could control more than one light as long as the max ratings are not exceeded.

Is there a minimum LED load for this timer to function? No display or functions with the three LED lights. It does nothing. On and Off do not turn lights off manually.

Does this timer work with 14/2 wire? The diagram asks for a red wire, but it's drawn as if it's just the other end of the black wire (going to load, ie an outdoor light). A red wire would indicate it needs 14/3 wire.
