Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great at blocking stains and sealing Note: I used this to seal exposed brown paper and gypsum on drywall, alas it worked. The problem I was encountering was gypsum exposed in places. Internet tells me using normal primer on that would be a bad idea, and it should be sealed first before painting, or else horrible bubbles will ensue. Some said to use Zinsser 1-2-3, and Kilz Original primer could be another option. I ended up using this guy and it worked fine. I didn't need a full pint, so continued to use this over drywall mud on patched places, worked fine too. It does smell pretty strongly, so the working area will have to be aired out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great primer to use I painted the ceiling without the primer for a few water spot buy still showing after numerous coats. The primer covered everything as it was supposed to do. Highly recommend to apply primer first.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worked well I used this a primer we the painting some old cabinets I salvaged. I would recommend picking up the stir sticks and thoroughly mixing as the bottom of the can gets quite thick (even with shaking) I let did two coats and so far my diy has held up. And I would recommend thoroughly cleaning the cabinets before priming to remove any grease.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Product On the advice of my local contractor, I used Kilz primer for the walls in my bathroom. I couldn’t be happier. It penetrates deep and gives the best foundation for paint or other products to adhere with maximum efficiency.

I want to paint my kitchen cabinets but not 100% sure how to go about it. I'm looking into getting the BEHR Premium Plus semi-gloss paint (Model# 712004C) and am wondering if this primer will work well with that brand/type and for this particular job? TIA

Asked by: Nicole
Behr Kiltz works 100 percent, putting it on first, then painting the cabinets. The grain or the coat of stain you are painting overtop will not bleed through as long as you put the kiltz on first.

I recently used this primer on the wood paneled inside of an old steamer trunk. I let it dry 18 hours (dry to touch) before two coats of latex paint. It's been three weeks and I can still smell the off-gassing from the primer. Any suggestions?

Asked by: Rachel55
To get rid of the odor, buy a can of coffee, sprinkle enough of the dry coffee ground to line the entire bottom of the trunk and let it sit at least overnight. Then vacuum out the coffee grounds. This technique works to absorb all kinds of odors. The offgassing of oil-based products like Kilz is an unfortunate “side effect”, but the product is very effective at blocking stains and providing good adhesion for your top coat.

Does this work to prime overtop of alkyd ceiling paint to prepare for water based paint?

Asked by: Hd24
Hi Dh24, thank you for your question. The Kilz Original Primer can be applied over alkyd paints on ceilings. Cleaning is recommended, and scuff sanding may be needed if the previous coating is glossy. Have a great day! - Randy
