Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible warranty I bought this about 7 years ago and had good occasional use for 5 years. Sandpaper clips broke after 1 year. Then the bearings went on it. I bought the rigid on purpose because of the lifetime warranty. The store was of no use to me. They said deal with the 1800 number. I did and found that ridgid tools were no longer serviced in Winnipeg. A city big enough to have many Stores. So the only option was to ship it at my cost to a neighbouring province and it would be assessed. Most Ridgid tools are heavy. So shipping this is almost the cost of a new tool. So beware There essentially is no warranty on ridgid tools if you live outside of the few repair depots they have for the whole country.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from :( infuriating clamp system this was a great sander! for the first week... unless you plan on working with 80 grit sandpaper all the days of your life, because THATS ALL IT CAN HOLD. You see that fancy new holding system on the front. As one of the other reviewers said correctly, it sands away itself within a couple of uses and cannot hold down a thing, especially the finer grit paper which stays on for about 5 seconds, and its not that i'm Pressing too hard on the poor baby sander lol. i can now hear the paper loosening the moment i turn it on and it flies out soon after touching the work surface. its a shame such a good design in terms of dust collection and power has become null because of this horrid new clamp design.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Design flaw Front clamp for the paper is plastic. It will fail at some point. No matter what you do the sandpaper will eventually wear away the clamp to the point where it can no longer hold the paper. At that point the sander is useless. I see others have had the same problem. Those with good reviews have just purchased it. I liked mine when I got it. But the sandpaper has worn away the clamp and now it is useless. I just purchased the Dewalt, the clamps are all metal (as is almost every other one I looked at). I have many other Ridgid tools but this one is flawed by design. It will fail.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from the new 1/4 sheet sander I bought one in canada a couple weeks ago even though I didn't care for some of the reviews I've read. I don't know if they are different in the states but mine seems to be very well constructed. the new clamping system seems to hold extremely well and it's very quick and easy to change paper. The dust system seems to work very well also. the weight feels comfortable and easy to hold on to . And if I do have a problem I'v registered for the lifetime warranty. One thing I think a lot of people do wrong is push to hard when they're sanding rather than let the machine do the work. I also have a ridgid 13'' planer and a cordless drill and circular saw . Very satisfied with Ridgid products in Canada.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Huge design failure Sorry Rigid, I like most of your tools, but this sander is probably the single worst tool you've ever created. I was able to use it for all of 12 minutes before it was promptly stuffed back in the box and returned. The problem: the REAR clamp won't stay locked in place. I've read numerous reviews about people complaining about the front clamp - I had no issues there, but maybe those issues occur at the 15 minute mark, I didn't get that far. The mere vibrations are enough to cause the rear clamp arm to repeatedly spring out of it's ill designed track. It needs to be held under something, not simply wedged into a smooth slot. What a horrible over-sight, how did this ever make it past testing??? With no paper loaded I gently poked at the closed clamp lever and it popped out with almost no force. Disgusting. I bought this over the dewalt because I prefer Rigid's on/off switch, but I'm going to be shopping around better for a properly designed one. Horribly disappointing from such a major name.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Front clip fails to hold paper The front clip that holds the paper in place is made of plastic, and the rough side of the sandpaper vibrates against it. Unsurprisingly, it sands down as soon as you start using the tool. After a couple of hours use, the clip no longer holds the paper. What a terrible design for an otherwise good sander. If the clip was metal, this wouldn't be an issue. As it is, I may as well go buy something else.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad Sander This sander is bad for many reasons. Sand paper front clip doesn’t hold the paper well. It constantly falls out. The dust collection works horribly. I have punched out the sand paper as directed and it probably only collects 1% of the dust. It’s basically useless. The sander overheats quickly. Mine makes a rattling sound which started the second time I used it. Do not buy.

Can you sand drywall patches with this sander?

I have moved into a house and have had to do a lot of drywall patches. Would I be able to use this to sand down the spots I have filled? If not which sander would be for the job. Thanks
Asked by: Anonymous
No you can't use this for drywall. Tool Rental has a sander you can use.

Can using this sander with a shop vac damage the sander?

I have gone through 2 of these sanders in the past month. I did not abuse the sanders, never dropped them. They both just quit working while sanding. The first one got under 2 hours of use, the second one got under 10 minutes of use before dieing. I had the sanders connected to my Ridgid shop vac while sanding and I am wondering if the static electricity from the vacuum connection could have caused the failure? The manual does state that you can use them with a shop vac connection. Thank you in advance!
Asked by: Anonymous
Yes you can use these with a vac. Not sure about the failures, they are under warranty just replace them. Just a reminder that these are for wood sanding only. If used with drywall or sanding drywall they will burn out as fast as the ones you had.

Is there anything that can be done about the fact that the front clip won't hold paper anymore?

Asked by: Anonymous
If the clip will not hold paper, if the unit is new, under 90 days, then exchange it for another as the clip is defective. If it is worn, then a service center can replace it for you.
