Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible I previously used General Finishes Java Gel on a project with great results. I thought I would try a gel stain again for my current project and saw the Varathane product in HD. It is simply just horrible. It just sits on top of the wood. Literally. When I tried working it over the wood it left me with a scratchy effect where you can see hair like wisps of the wood underneath that aren't coloured at all. Where it does color, it is completely opaque like a paint, and you can't see any of the wood grain underneath. The General Finishes gel stains are thinner, and allow you to fully work it onto (technically not into) the wood and it gives a nice even color where you can still see some of the wood grain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous brown/black! Quick and easy to use The colour is a gorgeous brown/black. The product itself is extremely quick and easy to use. I applied a coat of the colour “weathered grey”gel stain first, on a solid wood tablet that I saved from going to the dump. I let that dry for a couple of days, then I applied a coat of the espresso gel stain over top. I used a variety of bristle brushes, from the dollar store, that I ran through the espresso gel stain, to create a wood grain effect, and reveal some of the weathered grey. The finished product was stunning! It took a couple of weeks before the table was completely cured and ready to be used. I did not apply a clear top coat as I didn’t think it was necessary.

Im staining my kitchen cupboards darker. Before i stain them can I just apply the gel or do I have to sand everything down. I wasnt sure as the cupboards have a veneer finish.

Hi Mactavish, Our Premium Gel Stain can be applied to both bare wood and a previously veneered/painted surface. We recommend a good clean of the cupboards prior to application for maximum adhesion. Most importantly, we recommend testing the stain on a small area first.

Can I use this GEL stain to cover an already Varathaned table

Hi Gordo, Great question! Our Premium Gel Stain is for bare wood only. All previous coatings/finishes must be removed. Sand in direction of the wood grain to obtain a smooth surface. Remove all sanding dust using a vacuum or cloth dampened with mineral spirits.

Can this be sprayed on? Using a paint sprayer.  Want to freshen up a stained vaulted beam Ceiling.  Impossible to use a brush roller or wipe on with a rag

Hi Kerry needs help, Unfortunately, we do not recommend using a paint sprayer with this product. Apply our Premium Gel Wood Stain using a good quality, natural bristle brush, applicator or clean lint-free cloth. If you would like to still use a sprayer, you will need to test this on your own. However, if something were to go wrong, we would not be able to stand behind the product.
