Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very thick - not useable as-is This clear coat is next to impossible to use as-is. I have had to add varsol to thin it in order to not see brush strokes. From the can, it’s like syrup and yes, most likely the formula has changed due to EPA / Cdn Feds environmental emissions standards. But they really shouldn’t put this product out because I have found it impossible. I would say I’m at about 8 parts clear to 1 part varsol to get it to a point where it’s lays flat w/o brush marks. I’ve had to sand a number of times from my original coat where massive brush divets were left behind.  Varathane should really try this product out in real world conditions and they will know what I mean.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Finish but one tip I used this product to spray a stained cabinet door. The first coat worked out perfect, level and even shine. When finished I immediately inverted the can and sprayed until there was air to clear the nozzle so I could reuse the can for the second coat. 30 minutes later I went to spray the second coat and it sputtered (small blobs) creating a not so nice 2nd coat. I am going to guess some varathane dried up in the nozzle. So I am going to suggest varathane Aerosol is a one time use unless the manufacture can respond with a solution around this issue of second use.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Poor quality Have used this on a couple projects and not impressed with the quality. I much prefer the minwax to this brand as the minwax has given me a smoother finish and proven more durable to the wear and tear of my young children. I did like the quick drying time but overall disappointed in the product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Avoid! First off, I would have given this zero stars since I returned it after tirelessly trying to get a smooth finish but, to no avail. This product is too thick and dries too fast. you apply too thin you’ll get brush strokes, any more you get bubbles, which don’t settle. I’ve followed the instructions on the label and the PDF online and you just can’t work with this stuff. $25 natural brush, near empty jar and sandpaper all being returned. I did 4 coats, and wasted too much time with this stuff. Save yourself. Gloss/Colour is nice though. Lol

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Used to be good This used to be really good finish. The formula or something changed and this is nowhere near professional result. I would not recommend to use this on anything that gets actual use like table top or furniture. After less than 1 year the finish starts to flake off (and no this is not a one bad batch this happens with different cans). Low quality at ridiculous price and the worst thing is HD doesn't offer any competitive alternative anymore either (what happened to MinWax?)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finish on fir floors looks beautiful I really liked the product but the applicator that we were told to spread it was awful and caused so many bubbles. We applied it on stairs with a brush and it’s absolutely beautiful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great alternative to using a brush Great product, it works well for me. I was hesitant at first since some other reviews said they had problems with runs and stuff... I never had these issues, I make sure I’m about 6” away from my work and spray at an even speed in rows back and forth... make sure you start and stop spraying before and post your work... if you start or stop right on the work surface you will get runs.... just be aware that most things will need 2-3 coats with a 400grit light sanding after the last 2 coats you do. Great for smaller sized projects.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Satin Finish it is not! I bought this and received it in curb side delivery from Home Depot. Can't find out how to get a refund so I guess I'm stuck with it, When you buy "Satin" you expect a satin finish. It was at least Semi Gloss. Lucky I still had a competitors product to finish my project. Buyer beware.

A Home Depot employee suggested this to cover/seal a white arborite kitchen countertop. The can & description online it says it dries with an amber (or warm) effect/finish. I would a clear finish. Which product should I buy?

Asked by: MeJaneMac
This product is not meant for that.  Why would you put anything on Arborite?  It’s meant to be the wearing surface. ANYTHING you attempt to paint on top of it will affect the sheen, colour and performance of the original surface. It will eventually flake or peel off in places and you’ll end up throwing it out.  I’ve owned an off white kitchen laminate countertop for 20 years and it was fine until the day I replaced my kitchen.

Can you finish painted particleboard or MDF with this product?

Asked by: Jbeca
Hi Jbeca, Our Professional Oil-Based Clear Finish can be applied to a painted particleboard or MDF, as long as they are in good condition. And remember, it's always best to test on a small area first.

I don't believe it is, if you are building or refinishing a cutting board or something that is going to used for food - try WATCO Butcher Block oil and finish -

This product is quite thick. Can one thin it out with paint thinner for ease of application?

Asked by: ACCD
It can be thinned but not a good idea as the quality of the finish will suffer - not as thick as you might think and easily applied by brush

I plan on keeping the woods natural colour and not staining. The wood is alder, do I still need to use a wood conditioner?

Asked by: CaraP
I have used this oil product on Fir and Hemlock without a wood conditioner. It brings the grain and character of the wood to life. So much better than a Diamond water based product does.

Exactly how many VOC does a gallon of Varathane Oil-Based PRO Finisher have? The marketing material only says "low VOC". Please make sure you provide the answer of VOC per gallon, not per litre. Thanks.

Asked by: Buyer07
Hi, Great question! Our Varathane ProFinisher has <2.9 lbs. of VOC per gallon. We hope this helps.

Is this product good for restoring old wall wood panels? the paneling still has a nice pecan color.

Asked by: ed82
Yes, Varathane Pro Finisher would be an excellent choice for wood panels. If you suspect a previous coating has already been applied, clean the surface well, and scuff it with 220 grit sandpaper before applying the Varathane Pro Finisher.
