Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good lathe Good lathe, a few things I would like. It's hard to use the lower speeds as you have to unscrew the pulley cover to use low speeds. The tailstock was a little loose and slides a bit on the bed. It is possible to stall out motor if agressively turning. The bed is a bit short but an extension is available. New users should remember that a talon chuck is about 300$. Add a couple of hundreds for turning tools. You will need a slow speed grinder with a blue wheel. Overall I think it's a good starting lathe. Serious users will want to upgrade after a year. If you buy good tools you can use them with your next lathe.

HOME DEPOT priced matched another sellers price and also shipped it to my door within 3 days for FREE. I don't turn large stuff but if I choose to , King makes a bed extension. Lots of power in motor, seems well made. Variable speed and reverse is very nice . If you're looking for your 1st lathe or just as a hobby then I'd recommend this one .

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great mid-sized wood lathe. I've had this lathe about six weeks and it has served me well. Well made and built to last. Be careful what you set it on as it is very heavy. I ordered this lathe online for delivery to the store, and the process was fast and efficient.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from VERY HAPPY This lathe seems to hold its own. It has good power. I like the light and the reverse feature. It has many features of more expensive machines at a low price. Perfect for a beginner turner like me. The only thing I'm disappointed about is that even though it says it is an 18 inch length you can't turn more than 16 inch lengths but overall I'm happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lathe Downsized from a 34" between centres lathe to make some more room in the shop. This is a great lathe. No vibration (it is heavy). Would recommend to anyone wanting to do smaller projects.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Serious piece of equipment This lathe is big, heavy and powerful - not for the faint of heart. It accommodates large pieces of wood with ease and the 1 hp motor is more than capable. Two small issues - The wires 'behind' the lathe are messy ... a harness system would nice. AND, the banjo is substantial making pen turning a little awkward. I think I will use my mini lathe for small turnings.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great machine The lathe is great for what I need. The power is sufficient and it's stable. It has been machined well so all the parts line up properly. The lamp isn't as useful as it could be because the arm isn't long enough and the bolt holding it to the headstock gets loose. I definitely got a used machine, however. There's a significant dent in the lamp shade, a spring is missing for the belt cover, and there were signs of use on the tool rest. Overall, I'm very happy with the lathe but would've appreciated Home Depot taking a look over the machine before reselling it.

What is the largest diameter bowl one could turn with this?

The maximum bowl size is just shy of 12". The toolrest and base will only extend about 11 7/8" from center.

would this lathe be too large to turn pens on?

Hi, Thank you for your question, The vendor have confirmed that this model is ideal for turning pens. You can do small turnings on a large lathe, but cannot do large turnings on a small lathe. Also they suggested that they have a pen turning chuck bundle accessory kit available for this lathe, model 48265 and also they have a smaller lathe that we call a pen lathe model KWL-813VS if you are concerned about overall size or bench space.

What is the exact overall length of the King 12 inch X 18 inch lathe INCLUDING the bed extension?

Hi, Thank you for your question, The vendor have confirmed that it is quite difficult to be exact - not know what this information will be used for. If vendor use the example of situated between two walls and the tailstock extended to the maximum (reasonable) position, then it is 62 1/2" from handle wheel to handwheel. If the tailstock is a far out as truly possible then it is 64 1/8". Please keep in mind that if you have constraints on either end, the handles would be difficult to access.
