Carriage Bolts are mostly used in wood or metal to wood applications with a domed top and a square body under the head. This square body pulls into the wood as the nut is tightened. When using carriage bolts always use a flat washer between the wood and hex nut to eliminate pull-through of the nut in the wood. Drill pilot hole slightly larger than body diameter of bolt. Insert the carriage bolt so the headed end is on finished side of project for appearance or safety. Length is measured from under head to end of bolt. Use hot dipped galvanized finish or stainless steel where corrorsion is and rust is of concern or for exterior applications. Hot dipped galvanized finish provides one of the highest degree of corrosion resistance when compared to a steel zinc finish. Ideal for outdoor projects such as decks, fences, wood structures and with treated lumber installations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Boltiest bolt. Very good bolt, bolted strongly... the nut was able to grip tightly. Together, nothing could stop the pair from holding each other for all eternity. I have faith that this was the boltiest bolt you can buy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ruined my weekend I couldn't put the new floor on my utility trailer together and now my weekend is ruined. I've worked on 10 million dollar machines and $200 cars, so I know what to expect from the entire spectrum of fasteners. These carriage bolts are garbage. I purchased a pack of 50 and _many_ of them do no fit the 1/4-20 nuts I purchased (5026-214). At first I thought the galvanized coating made the threads a bit gritty, but no, even with a socket wrench the nuts and bolts simply do not come together without having to muscle them on. I shouldn't need 1ft of leverage to tighten 1/4-20 bolts, They should come together using only fingers. I'm certain that all of the bolts are indeed 1/4-20s. There appears to be an inconsistency in the threads or a major problem with the HDG coating. I thought paulin made decent fasteners. Where is the quality control?

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Carriage head bolts, check merchandise Purchased during Covid shutdown, bolts are fine, picker got 5 of the right size and one larger in the bag, requiring an extra visit to store and a couple of phone calls, very inconvenient

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Outdoor? Not so appropriate. The original black finish looks good before installation. Yet after installation it becomes flaky. Would not use it for outdoor purposes. The hot galvanized one would be much better.

Will this carriage bolt ruin my weekend?

Asked by: Steve Drangus
Home Depot asked me to answer your question. I purchased these carriage bolts earlier in the summer, and they have been holding together a bench ever since. Very reliable. No drama. Especially on weekends. No posers or weak links in the 2 dozen I got. I hope yours are equally solid.
