Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very efficient and well suited to use with solar I installed this at my summer cottage which is off-grid (powered entirely by a solar system), so energy consumption is a real focus and with this unit, I couldn't be happier. It can operate in heat pump mode only, or using the standard heating elements as supplemental heat. I have mine set to use the heat pump only and it draws only about 600 watts! And it's running at an efficiency level approximately 4 times better than regular heaters. Using it in a home that is occupied year-round, the efficiency wouldn't be as good as what I'm getting, but for a summer cottage, it rocks!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Super Bad Software - Beware We have had this tank for 5 months now. It is not too loud and could have been good. The software is so incredibly poor and keeps turning off the heat, so pretty much once a week we have no hot water in the morning. I have found about 20 software errors. It constantly looses track of the day and time (about once a week), so is useless if you want to use the power when the rates are lower as we are trying to do. It turns it self to disable mode if you set it to not use power during certain times instead of to off mode. It can't handle when the time changes. The most poorly designed and poorly tested software I have used. (as of May 2024).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent configurability & lower energy footprint Very easy to hook up and extremely efficient; we're a family of 3 but with a large home - 4 bathrooms, etc and an airbnb. I currently have it on heat pump only mode and it works flawlessly; when we have guests i switch it over to eco mode so that it will initiate the elements to catch up on demand (if needed). We switched from an electric tank (60 gallon) and haven't looked back. It has only been ~2 months but very positive change to our energy footprint.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This heater is very efficient in heat pump mode. This heater is much more efficient and cheaper to run that natural gas (if you use a heat pump mode). It takes about 0.8Kw to heat up 50gal to 45°. And then it is enough for 4 showers and 2 loads of laundry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Energy efficient! Very efficient hot water tank. Installed the ECoNet app, and have hot water for my family of 3 while using less than 3kWh per day.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So far so good, appears very efficient My natural gas water heater finally started leaking so it was time. Initially I wanted to go tankless natural gas as my parents had done so & were happy with the change. They saved money & the ability to select temperature with a digital control was a bonus. However, the carbon tax on natural gas is brutal at the moment & there's no sign of that going away. I did some research & found out about these hybrid units, having never heard of them before. I was a bit intimidated by the price, but tankless NG heaters aren't exactly cheap either. I had to run a new electrical circuit for this heater vs replacing the old with another NG unit, so extra expense there. I've only had it functioning for a few days but I'm impressed with the performance so far. I'd read some negative reviews regarding noise, but my unit makes less noise than my fridge when the heat pump is running. It's in the basement so I don't hear a thing. Control of the unit via phone app is a huge step vs standard heaters. The only reason I haven't given 5 stars is the price. It's a big investment, hopefully it will amortize relatively quickly as I take less of a hit on carbon tax by ditching one natural gas appliance. I'm thinking the NG range will be next out the door to replaced with electric. ;-)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Efficiency Dream! This is an efficiency beast. If you like savings, and SMART tech this thing is perfect! Vacation mode, turn off when you are 600m away from home. Leak detection, 2 zone, and cheap to run. Also, potention Efficiency NS/Canada Green Homes rebates up to $1400.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rheem hybrid noise levels The noise emitted is significant when the heat pump is active. Don’t install this near any living space.

Our water heater is in a storage room with our HVAC unit. Would it be easy to vent the cool air from this water heater outside using the existing HVAC ductwork?

Asked by: JSBNB
There is a kit and it should be connected like a dryer vent. We thought about venting through a secondary unused, lined Chimney but decided to run intake (just a small vent to the outside room. Heat pump likes heat to be efficient. The output will be vented outside on its own ductwork. I am not sure you can or should place on an HRV out duct, but it may be fine. Call an HRV contractor. They will be more accurate code wise and free to ask questions.

Is this hot water heater noisy?

Asked by: GDaw
I would say it is about as loud as running a dryer. I close the door to the room and it doesn't bother me.

Hi, I have an Oil-fueled water heating system for hot water and baseboard hot water home heating. Since my oil tank reached a time to be replaced, I want to go electric. Will this Rheem Proterra 50 Gallon would work to replace the Oil-furnance?

Asked by: Prab
If it is only an oil fired hot water heater, and not used for heating than yes. This Proterra is very efficient but not a home heating system. You can remove the "hot water" portion of an oil heating furnance easily and still heat with oil and use the Proterra for hot water, we did so until we installed efficient wood and a whole home heat pump system. It will save you and has rebates through Canads Greener Homes and also some provinced. We received $1500 in rebates for the Proterra purchase between Prov/Fed rebates that helped.

I understand this runs on 240v, but is there a way to run the heat pump on 120v by chance so it can run off a solar inverter?

Asked by: Red Squirrel
My understanding is that the Proterra can run on either a 30 Amp (240 V) circuit or on a 15 Amp (120 V) circuit. This allows some flexibility to match the homeowner's electrical load (panel capacity and usage). A different question for your solar inverter requirement is will the Proterra accommodate the fluctuating voltage from the inverter. This is a question for an electrician/installer.

Does this heat pump need any venting? I currently have an electric hot water tank and am looking to upgrade to this to go with our solar panels. My hubby is extremely handy and had installed a HW tank before. Do we need to hire a pro?

Asked by: Ambs
You don't need to vent it, I have mine in my basement unvented. You do need access to a drain for the condensate. It also will generate cool air when it runs, but mine is in a space where that doesn't matter too much.

I currently have an electric water tank. Would I need any extra wiring or something to replace to this model? How efficient is this compared to a regular electric water tank? Where do I get more info about the rebate?

Asked by: Charles
This unit creates condensation, so you would need a drain to run the condensation hose to. But you should be able to use the existing electrical and pipe connections. This tank is about 4x as efficient as a regular electric tank. You can also program it to run mostly overnight during cheap electric rates if you have a time-of-use plan. If you look up the Canada Greener Homes Grant you can find the federal rebate program, you need to get an energy audit done first. There may be other local rebates too.
