This is the newer version and places the battery behind the unit which I find good for balance. The trimmer made shaping my shrubs easy as I found it maneuverable and light enough that I had no arm fatigue.

I still use the big corded trimmer to do our hedge and shrubs because it cuts more at one time but this device makes keeping things trimmed around the yard so much easier. I bought because I had a similar but much under-powered unit that didn’t last very long. I got this because it works with the batteries I already have. So far it has worked flawlessly.

It is way way easier to trim the grass around the flowers with this , than with big heavy scissors. The hedge trimmer is for light duty only, so don't get too carried away with larger branches. Passer byes are always asking where she got them, and how much they cost. Great purchase.

I had hoped that the tool would cut grass blades cleanly, but instead it did not cut very well at all. I had high hopes and was disappointed. I returned the tool and ordered the old version P2906BTLVNM. Fingers crossed that this other model works better.

This is my second one as I wore the first one out after years of heavy use. We live on parked out acreage so usage is extremely heavy and I couldn't live without it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light weight and comfortable Grass shears I bought this grass shears & shrub trimmer combo as the shears was the only model that would fit into the Ryobi caddy. I injured my shoulder and can't use a string trimmer, so using the caddy to trim most of the grass standing up was a better option then bending over with just the shears. The shears fit into the caddy easily and trimming the grass on a horizontal surface worked very well, but I couldn't tilt it at an angle to trim the grass along the sidewalk. The tool runs very hot, I burned my hand removing it from the caddy as I didn't expect it to be hot. I don't know if there is a problem with the shears or if this is normal. I've had Gardenia cordless grass shears for 13 years and they have never been hot after use however they are not as powerful as the Ryobi shears. The battery runs for about half an hour and charges fairly quickly. I won't be using the shrub attachment for a while so I can't comment on how well it performs. The shears do a great job trimming the grass whether they are hand held or on the caddy so I would definitely recommend them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works well on easy to trim foliage This little trimmer is great for pruning small plants like snow in summer. Far easier than a pair of shears. I use it in my rock garden and really like how easy it is to groom soft foliage. I doubt its very good with woody or difficult to cut material and it says grass only right on it. The extension is great for reaching into areas of my garden I can't get to easily. It's quite light weight so reaching with it is easy. With a 2Ah battery I can cut for 30 min or so. Which is ample for my needs. I have numerous porter cable batteries from drills and a Ryobi adapter so I can trim longer but so far haven't need them. Pretty happy with the purchase. One word of warning. I was thinking it was kind of a toy and was pretty casual the first time I used it. I would hold plants with my left hand and trim with the right. My fingers got a little too close to the blades at one point and it touched the end of my finger. In an instant it split the finger tip and broke the finger nail in half. Lots of bleeding. Be aware this thing can do damage if you're not careful. Don't be a doomas like I was ;)

Can this trimmer be used with a 4.0AH battery? I have other Ryobi tools that use a 4.0AH battery, and I want to know if I can use the battery for this trimmer.

I use the 4ah battery & 2ah with all the tools. Think volts as power and ah as duration. It will run longer than a 2 given the same load.

How many amps does this tool draw or conversely, the wattage of the tool.

Hello, I am not sure it is possible to really answer this question. There are no markings or ratings on the tool itself. Most cordless tools are "rated??" as such by the battery's Ah, or amp hours, the higher the Ah, the longer it will last. The best I can come up with is maybe 3-5 amps. Again, the size of the battery does not mean higher power, just that it will last longer.

Two questions. 1) Would WD-40 be good for lubricating the blades? 2) Why does the grass I cut always seem to turn yellow a few days later after? I ensure to cut off no more than 1/3, and no lower than my freshly mowed lawn.

I would not recommend using WD-40 as a lubricant, as it is better suited towards resisting corrosion. There are many other lubricants on the market that would be better for this application. What is the difference between Grass Shear and Shrubber Trimmer P2970VNM vs P2980VNM? Which one is newer?
