Rated 4 out of 5 by from Be careful of the Sizing! I just bought this 8" storm collar for my 8" O.D. insulated chimney. It looks great and is made of heavy gauge aluminum but when assembled the diameter is 12" not 8". I'm now assuming that the listed diameter is actually the inside diameter (I.D.) of the pipe and with the addition of 2" walls would come to 12", but by that logic I would need a 4" storm collar. Home Depot needs to include a product description that explains the sizing of these collars. I think I'll just cut this one down to size rather than try to re-order, but really...!

What does 8" refer to? The height of the collar or the diameter of the opening? If diameter, is 8" the top of the collar (narrower end) or bottom?

It refers to pipe diameter it fits. In this case it fits an 8” insulted chimney. Chimney has 2” of insulation around diameter of pipe it fits so it will fit tight to 12” diameter outside diameter of chimney.
