Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful colour with Ash hardwood Used for a table I made (4 different colours) and the Cabaret turned out amazing. Easy to use, set in a bit longer than an hour but I put it on heavy, but only took 1 coat and I didn't use conditioner. Would for sure recommend.

It completely covered the grain in some places and didn’t in others, it looks like I just did a bad painting job. I’ve never had a problem with a traditional conditioner then a stain. It’s thick like a paint too not like a stain. The product name is very misleading. I have to now spend half a day tomorrow sanding down a table trying to save it, thanks varathane. You lost a loyal customer with this product, I’ll be using minwax from now on. Didn’t expect it from a company who’s products I’ve loved for years. If I could give it a 0 star I would.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Pas la couleur annoncée sur le pot La couleur n'est pas du tout blanc jauni. Je n'ai même pas utilisé le pot, nous avons teint 1 côté d'une contre-marche et ça a été assez. Finalement on a juste verni 3 couches et j'ai eu la couleur que je recherchais en achetant ce pot. La couleur c'est gris sale pas blanc jauni. Un gris poussière accumulée depuis 100 ans que personne a lavé. Vraiment déçue, c'est un 30$ que j'aurai pu mettre sur autre chose qu'un pot à jeter. La couleur est de la mauvaise représentation ou il y a eu un sérieux mélange dans les étiquettes.

How long the smell is going to last? I did my stairs with two coats 5 days ago, and there is still strong smell in the house. Is there anything I can do to about it?

The time is now to cover the stain with sealer of some kind. Water-based polyurethane will be least smelly.

Does weathered gray Rust-Oleum stain have a matte finish or does it leave any kind of shine.. A review said he out varathane on top of this stain is that necessary?...

Hi Megf, Our Ultimate Oil-Based Interior Wood Stain has a sheen to it. However, a clear finish should be applied afterwards to protect the colour.

Do I use a paintbrush to apply this to stairs?

Hi Mich, Apply one coat of stain liberally with a good quality brush or clean, lint-free cloth to your stairs. Apply a test sample on a small inconspicuous area before proceeding with the entire job. Apply the stain across the grain until the wood is saturated on top. Allow to penetrate for 5-10 minutes then remove excess by wiping with a rag in the direction of the grain. Removal of all excess material is essential to ensure proper dry time and proper adhesion of topcoat.

Does this stain need a clear coat over top?

Hi Karyn, We do recommend clear coating to protect the stain from wear & tear. To complete your project, choose one of the many Varathane® Premium Wood Finishes. Allow Varathane Ultimate Wood Stains to dry for 1 hour before applying the finish. Darker colours may require a slightly longer dry time.
