Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works great but included tool didn’t work I recently bought several new Weiser smartkey locks for a house I just moved into. However, each lock only came with two keys and of course we all need much more than that. I bought this kit so I would have 4 of the same key that open all the locks. Smartkey process is dead easy, however I’m deducting a star because the included tool with a molded handle barely worked the first time I tried it because the handle stopped it from properly going all the way in (or it was broke) Luckily my other locks came with a smartkey tool (just thin metal with no handle that worked much better) so I used that one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great way to rekey your locks Simple, effective and inexpensive way to rekey entry locks for a rental suite in our house. About 15 seconds per lock to change things. Note that you get two different new keys in the package and that the "contractor" keys are a completely different cut than the main keys. Gives you a way to grant temporary access to a space and then you change the keys back to the main set when they are done (so even if the contractor keys are duplicated, they won't work in the lock then).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Make sure you open your door first! Look at instructions and videos online first. The instructions on the kit missed two key points. 1. Open the door before you re-key the lock so you don't lock yourself out if the re-key fails (I learned the hard way!). 2. In step 3, insert the new key ALL the way in and turn the new key 180 degrees counter-clockwise instead of the 90 degrees indicated in the instructions. Weiser customer service was awesome. They helped me figure out how to open the mis-keyed lock without calling a locksmith and re-key it right on my second attempt. Rare to see such good customer service these days. Note: to open the (locked) miskeyed lock, I had to use the new key, pull it out slightly and giggle it until I could turn it clockwise 90 degrees, put in the key tool and remove the tool and key. Then re-insert the new key ALL the way in, turn 180 degrees counter-clockwise and remove.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Easy BUT re-key tool does not work The idea is brilliant and very helpful for those looking to rekey their locks. But the whole thing falls apart because the provided tool to "reprogram" the key is not long enough to fully engage the lock and put the deadbolt into reprogram mode. Luckily I also had the equivalent tool without all the stupid plastic and that worked like a charm. If I just had this product and nothing else, I would not have been able to reprogram the lock.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from DO NOT BUY - FAULTY ITEM DO NOT BUY!! I loved wiser because of their smart key technology. But this broke two of my door locks. This re key is about 1/3 shorter than the ones that come with the door handles. I've rekeyed a few doors but lost the original. Got this one and was locked out of my front and back door, neither new or old key worked. The shorter length does not put the lock into learning mode properly. This item is faulty and should not be sold as it can put people in serious danger. We had to take apart the lock and rebuild it to work. Glad youtube exist. Took my wife 2 hours to complete both. DO NOT BUY!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from frustrating when it fails. The rekey tool came with a piece of plastic on the front of it which prevented me from fully inserting it into the lock and engaging the rekey mechanism, but did not prevent me from removing my key. So somehow the lock forgot both the new and old key, preventing me from unlocking my door altogether. Found a video on YouTube with instructions on how to reset the lock by taking the whole thing apart, getting grease all over my hands, but I managed to do it. Only after it also failed in my backdoor did I notice that the rekey tool had a piece of plastic preventing it from being fully inserted. Once I removed the plastic, I was able to rekey the back door. To be clear, the plastic looked like it should have been there, so I wouldn't be surprised if this was fairly common. So if it works, then this is smooth and relatively painless, but if you get manufacturer's defects, then buckle up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply re-key! I have used the re-key kit for home/business recently and in the past. Very easy to use and always work as they should. Not expensive and simplify so as to not require multiple keys for one location.

I have lost the original key to my weiser combination lock. Can I rekey with this system?

Asked by: Pat62
To replace lost keys, you can have another Weiser WR6 key randomly cut. Take the cylinder out of the unit and have the lock department at your local home improvement store use the resetting cradle to read the newly cut key to your lock.

Can I purchase two re-key kits that have matching keys so I end up with 8 identical everyday keys and 4 alternate keys?

Asked by: Lester
Chances are, no, but it would be more cost effective to purchase one kit, open it and get four duplicates of the new key.

Can you use the 2 gold temp/alternate keys as everyday keys?  I noticed when I used the Silver everyday key to re-key the other 3 worked as well BUT not the 2 gold colour alternate keys.  Is there anyway to make these 2 keys everyday keys as well?

Asked by: Handy Dad
You can’t use the gold keys but you use them if you wanna re key again down the road

how to recover the misprogrammed cylinder? I followed the steps of Weiser website, still not working.

Asked by: nicktimmy
If their instructions did not work call them contact Weiser Consumer Service Team at 1-800-501-9471. I completely misread the instructions and my new deadbolt locks and the re-keying system were not functional. Completely my fault! Called Weiser and they sent me a new cylinder free of charge. Fantastic customer service. On another note you can take the cylinder to a locksmith to have it re-programmed however call Weiser first, free is much better than paying a locksmith.

i have weiser smart key , but i don't have keys , and the samrt key not working ,is this key working with any Weiser locked ?

Asked by: mary
I'm not sure I understand the question. The only thing I can say is that in order to change the key that is used for a smart key lock, you first have to start with the currentt key, then you use the SmartKey tool and then the new key. If you don't have an existing key for the lock to begin with, then you won't be able to rekey the lock. You will probably need a locksmith.

how do you know if your lock has the smartkey technology?

Asked by: qixu wholesale paper
The Smart Key product has a secondary small slot located to the left of the key hole, if there is no secondary slot it does not have the Smart Key capability.

If I bought a separate Weiser Door Knob and Dead bolt....both with separate smart keys. Can I set it up with a smart key so one key works for both locks.

Asked by: AppleGreene
Definitely. That's one of the great advantage of SmartKey. Simply follow the instructions in the knob or deadbolt package and in less than 1 minute you'll be able to rekey one of the locks to match the other new one. Or, if you already have Weiser SmartKey lock, you can rekey the 2 new items to operate using your existing key. Simple and Safe!
