Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zinnser BIN Primer We purchased a resale home from people who were chain smokers the entire house needed to be repainted and in the process we needed to cover the nicotine staining and kill the odour from the smoke. We bought 2 large pails of this Zinnser BIN primer sealer, although it stunk really bad and was hard on the eyes in enclosed areas it covered the staining and the smell in 2 coats. I would strongly reccommend this product to anyone looking to cover heavy staining or odours it worked wonderful now when we walk into our home it's freshness we smell.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great smelly stuff Yeah it stinks. But it dries fast so the smell doesn' linger. Goes on great and seals everything in. We've used two of the giant pails so far on this house we recently bought that was just covered in nicotine stains from the previous chain-smoking occupants. When we moved in, it just stunk. After sealing the main rooms with this stuff it smells just fine, and there's no yellow leaking through or anything. I highly recommend it!

Very good coverage of moisture stains, it's application was easy and smooth, it's not too thick and dries in no time; we did 2 coats and then 2 coats of the new behr kitchen and bath paint and the finish is absolutely flawless. My only complaint - which is why we didn't give it 5 stars is that it smells very strong - the fumes are intense so make sure to use it in a well ventilated area.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Sealer for wood knots After many failed attempts, this is the only product I have found that will completely seal wood knots. All other attempts resulted in the wood knots bleeding through in less than 2 years, but not with this product. It is well worth the money. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for Covering up Cigarette Tar and Nicotine I thoroughly researched what product to use to cover up the tar and nicotine stains and smell. Tenant smoked in the basement suite for ten years. The suite had been painted top to bottom just before the tenant moved in. After move out the ceiling was brown. I had to get it right the first time so there would be no problems for the next tenant. I spoke with many paint experts, painters, remediation professionals, etc. I watched YouTubes and read from many sources. I concluded that BIN Shellac Based Primer was the best product to use. The work was finished four months ago. Photo shows part of the ceiling painted with BIN. Glad I picked BIN !

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not quite as good as advertised I will admit I haven't tried other products, I bought this one because it said it would cover, in particular, graffiti. I had a wall covered with Sharpie, result of kids going a bit nuts, all colors. I first scrubbed the wall with alcohol and baking soda which took out the worst of it, but I had to put 3 coats of this primer in some areas to fully cover the writing. I was surprised how thin the primer was, I was expecting a thicker liquid to fully coat the wall. I rated it as good because at the end of the day it did do the job. And when they say ventilate the room well, they are not kidding. I was a bit woozy after applying a coat, and I had a window open and a fan going.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from works every time I've been using this product for about 25 years, I've tried the water based zinsser but it doesn't always work. This shellac base product pretty much guarantees a one coat cover of any and all stains. I build cabinets for a living and we use this stuff in our spray booth when it comes time to refinish cabinets etc. It is a professional product so it will have an unpleasant odour to it. It dries very fast ready to spray lacquer based paint within a half hour...definitely worth the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works, but be very careful This was reviewed on youtube as one of the best primers for sanded or unsanded laminate surfaces under latex or 'chalk' paint. As a shellac primer, it requires a shorter cure time, BUT it is extremely harsh to work with. A mask may not be enough, and if I use this again I would definitely use a respirator. Cover the area you're working in well, because if any droplets splash on an unintended surface, you may not be able to get them off, even if you act quickly. This primer adheres quickly and viciously! Under latex paint it still requires cure time, and will scratch/peel off easily even if it appears dry until it is fully cured.

Hi Myers, Sanding is always required to smooth out any remaining paint film edges, to remove any existing stains and to remove any loose or weathered wood fibers from exterior wood.

Does this BIN Shellac Primer work well on plastic? I need to prime a plastic rounded corner bead in my bathroom.

Worked good for my plastic coated crown. Would recommend spraying, as the shellac dries fast and leaves brush marks otherwise.

I've install new R2i Millwork PVC wainscot panels and moldings, and is pre-finished (no need to paint). I would like it to match the same "white" as the rest of the room. Will this primer adhere to PVC plastic?

For wall paneling in a 1970 house which primer will be best please? Do you have to sand the paneling or is there a primer that will stick without sanding? Thanks

For wood paneling, you can prime with either Zinsser BIN, Cover Stain, or Bulls Eye 123. Make sure to clean the surface really well. If the surface is very smooth, you can lightly scuff sand with 220-grit.
