Rated 1 de 5 de par It can't make up it's mind I bought this because my home A/C unit was acting up, & I needed to measure the temp at the vents. It worked fine, except for 1 problem. It can display the temperature in either Fahrenheit or Celsius. There is a switch inside the battery cover for this purpose. BUT, the 1 I got would change to Celsius all by itself every 25 to 30 readings or so. Then, I would have to open the battery compartment, switch it from Fahrenheit to Celsius and back. Then, it was good to go for another 25-30 readings before it switched again. I took it back and exchanged it for another one. This one would switch to Celsius every 4 or 5 readings. I took this one back and got a refund. It would be a good tool for anyone who is fluent in both Fahrenheit AND Celsius.

Rated 2 de 5 de par Entertainment Purposes Only I needed a IR thermometer so I grabbed this at the local HD and later bought a Kline IR1000. I was dong some AC work and measuring the basic temp split between return and supply so I took the opportunity to compare the Ryobi to the Kline. The Ryobi measures consistently 5-10 degrees higher than the Kline which I guess is within the specs for this unit. When I need accurate measurements I use a thermocouple and meter but when I'm taking a snapshot using an IR I would at least like to be somewhere close. The Kline is more expensive but it also has an accuracy of 1.5% so measuring 75 degrees it would be within a 1.125 degree swing not 5-10 degrees. I would say pass and get a more accurate unit unless you just want to play around. Picture 1 - Fieldpiece ST4 Thermocouple Picture 2 - Kline , Ryobi comparison

Rated 1 de 5 de par horrible Product: Buy Something Else This Ryobi os the same price as other thermometers but doesnt work as well and is more difficult to use. The battery cover does not close easily with the provided battery installed. The LCD screen is not backlit so using the device in normally lit rooms is difficult and in darkened areas requires a flashlight. Worst of all the temperature ratings are inaccurate and inconsistent. I tested reading a light bulb from ten feet, five feet, and one foot and received very different values. Teating inside an oven with higher than room temperature settings gave indicated readings of 88 F. Bad design, bad feature set, buy something else

Rated 5 de 5 de par Simple, works good, great value Having had some recent HVAC work done at my home i wanted an infrared thermometer to check readings at various registers. Being mainly concerned with the drop in temp from intake to exhaust at register. It works great. I love the simplicity, just pull the trigger and get a reading. No settings to adjust or memory features, etc. I find it to be acurate within 1-2 degrees when compared to the readout at the thermostat. Being a relentless DIYer I have no problem spending good money on quality tools that will last. For this particular purchase i thought the simple inexspensive tool would to the trick and it certainly did!

Although the price is great for a tool that used to be hundreds of dollars just a few years ago, there are better choices for less money like the Commercial Electric MS6520H. This unit is not very accurate as it can be off 7-9 deg F either way. This tool NEEDS a backlight, it's very hard to read in low light or at an angle (Commercial Electric MS6520H has one BTW) I had to carry around a flashlight so I could read the display. I'm not sure why the writeup on the website says that it has a "bright" display, it doesn't. After using the unit for about 3 min. it started to read deg. C. I turned off the unit to see if t would go back to deg F, but it didn't. I then opened the batt. compartment and there is a little cheap switch to change from C to F, I moved that back & forth a few times and then tried again...that did the trick. But then the next day it did the same thing, after a few min it went to C...I did the wiggle of the switch trick again, and it worked....but really, who wants to be fooling around with that all the time? I will return it and actually pay a little more for the Milwaukee as all my battery powered tools are Milwaukee & I really like them. Instructions are in English & Spanish. Items I've used it for (no particular order): 1. Checking around outside doors & windows for where the cold is coming in. If you hold down the switch you can get a continuous reading. 2. Checking the tires around my RV, truck & cars to see if there were any issues with brakes or tires 3. Checking my walls & ceiling for temperature variations where insulation might need to be added, or if insulation might have gotten wet or moved by varmints & is no longer working. 4. Checking components in an old amplifier, instead of blasting cold on them I used this tool to see if items that should be warm actually were warm. 6. Checking the temps of foods coming out of the microwave, although not super accurate, you can tell if you'll burn your mouth or not LOL!...or if it's still too cold& needs to go back in. 7. Checking the temp of my baseboard hot water heat to make sure there is no air pockets in the tubing. 8. Checked my pull down attic stairs to see how much heat I'm loosing with the current "tent" insulation I'm using...time to look for a better way! 9. After measuring...Realized how much heat I'm loosing with my whole house fan! I'll need to make a cover for that too. 10. Checking the hubs on my trailer for excessive heat I hope you found this review helpful, if so please give it a thumbs up, Thanks!

Poor quality: The manufacturer's specifications listed on the package state that it is accurate and consistent to +/- 5 degrees Celsius, which is 9 degrees Fahrenheit. That means if it reads 9 degrees higher or lower than the actual temperature then Ryobi still considered good. 9 Degrees variance is not suitable for precision cooking or troubleshooting an AC system. There are much better IR thermometers at the same price, such as the Commercial Electric MS6520H, which have a max variance of only 5 degrees Fahrenheit. The first two units I purchased had a loose battery connection and had to be returned. The third unit was operating between 2 and 9 degrees lower than actual temperature. I recommend choosing another product with more accuracy.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Time saver [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] During the recent cold snap, I thought that it would be a good idea to test for areas where cold air may be sneaking into the house. I had left my infrared thermometer in my camper 120 miles away so went to purchase another. There were several brands to choose from but being a long time Ryobi user I selected theirs. I used it right away and was surprised to find air leaks around the windows on the north and west side of my back room. I like the fact that it uses a 9 volt battery in this unit. I am very satisfied with the unit and Home Depot's inventory to have just what I needed.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Infrared Thermometer Review My home was experiencing a hot zone this summer. This had not been the case since a new system was installed almost five years ago. My wife complained about an office area on one end of our home which was unusually warm. I found this product on line and since I had very good luck with this manufacturer before I purchased this infrared thermometer. The thermometer gave me the information that I needed to ascertain there was a problem on one end of our home when the cooling cycle was on. I would recommend the product to anyone.

will this help me detect air leaks around windows and doors?

Posée par: jerri
I guess it would help- you would have to test air or wall next to window to get ambient temperature then go to edge of door/window to see changes in temp — there would always be some change so would have to do several openings for average then look for larger changes in temp - not the best way to achieve your goals

How do you change the battery?

Posée par: Mike66
Thank you for asking, Mike66. To install the battery: *Slide the battery cover down, then up and remove it from the handle of the thermometer. *Attach the battery terminals to their connectors on the thermometer. *Slide the switch inside the handle to select Fahrenheit or Celsius temperature readings. *Close the battery compartment by sliding the cover into place until it snaps closed. I hope this helps and we appreciate your interest in Ryobi! -Keri

Will this work for my pizza oven?

Posée par: Billie
Well it depends on your definition of pizza oven...Most commercial pizza ovens cook at temperatures ranging from 700 to 800 degrees. So this only goes up to 600 deg. When you make this Pizza at home, usually cook at temperatures ranging between 450 to 500 degrees, so this would work. The highest temp got the unit is 600 deg. If you found this helpful please click on the thumbs up, thanks, MikeTheReviewer.

I have a new one of these set to Farenheit. Is it just my unit, because this only occasionally reports Farenheit and instead reports Celsius even when the switch under the battery cover is set to Farenheit. ??? I need to know to exchange it or purchase a different brand of similar unit.
Posée par: CottonTop55
Mine has done that on occasion as well as other weird stuff even though the batteries are new, I just take out the batteries and wait a minute and then replace them....seems to work fine then. Ryobi needs to look a the programming in this thing and fix it! I use mine as a laser pointer to show workers where I'm talking about, saves getting up on a ladder to point something out!
