We were looking for an inexpensive bookcase for a child's small bedroom and due to the space restrictions, we were looking for specific dimensions. This bookcase fit the space perfectly and is not unattractive. It was easy to put together, but as my husband was putting the top piece on, one screw was out of place and once he backed it out, the particle board was ruined and the right side or that piece would not screw flush with the top shelf. It's just a decorative piece, so we used some wood glue and clamped it overnight so that it would stay in place. Nothing unexpected for particle board. The shelves are sturdy enough to support children's books. Overall, this bookcase met our needs and budget.

Rated 4 de 5 de par Perfect for my needs These shelves are exactly what I wanted. They are pressed wood, which is why the price is so reasonable, and for my uses they're fine. I gave them a 4 star, instead of 5 star rating, because of the included shelf holders. They were tiny and plastic. IF you are going to use these shelves for pretty nicknacks, then they are fine, but after reading the other reviews, and knowing I was going to load the shelves with books, I bought the 5mm metal shelf holders. The pre-drilled holes were not quite large enough, so it took a bit of banging with the hammer to get the metal ones in, but they're in. And the shelves are populated with books. A friend helped me put the units together (I bought 2) and they went together easy peasy. The directions were perfect, there were extra foo-dads (a non-technical term) instead of too few, and when all together they were square. For what more could I ask? While one could probably put them together, it was a snap having the extra pair of hands. It took longer to get the books on the shelves than to build the units ;-)

The instructions are clear and intuitive. The South Shore line of shelves are outstanding. Well thought out design. Their assembly guidance has evolved since I bought 10 shelf units with doors. They have eliminated gluing with tighter fitting wooden dowels and in some areas they use plastic dowels for better alignment and rigidity. Delivery was quick and without damage. I see that they improved the packaging with a very sturdy angled edge protector for the 4 sides of the shipping box. I had no cracking, mashing or chipping of the unit's flat pieces (sides, top, bottom and shelves). I've repurposed these protectors for packing my art pictures. I find that Home Depot has competitive prices and as fast shipping as any of the major internet vendors. The attached picture is the assembled unit between two other South Shore products.

My biggest complaint is how cheaply made and how cheap they look. I wasn’t expecting much for the price but I could’ve gotten the same junk cheaper elsewhere. Back is flimsy white cardboard (which arrives folded with a crease down the back) the adjustable shelf brackets are plastic and those shelves don’t really fit right when placed they are almost two small for the space. I do not recommend.

Rated 4 de 5 de par made a library in a nook pros: the shelves were easy to assemble and were packaged very well to prevent any shipping damage. They seem sturdy. came with a small bracket to attach to a wall for safety cons: the shelves are adjustable, but adjustments are limited. I put the 2 units side by side and the side wall of one is slightly warped so there is a small gap part-way down the center of the 2. could probably screw them together to eliminate the gap.

Based upon the positive reviews and the best price out there, I took a chance and ordered, sight unseen. I was not disappointed. Beautiful bright white finish and really sturdy. I put it together by myself in about an hour. Looks great in my laundry room next to my new front load washer & dryer. Now I have extra shelf storage for my laundry stuff. I'm a happy camper with this one.

Rated 2 de 5 de par Should've gone to IKEA Here are some things the instruction manual needs to clear up: For anyone confused by the first step in the assembly instructions, G(2) is different from G2. G(2) refers to both boards labeled G, while G2 refers to the three boards labeled G2. Also, when you are nailing the back of the bookcase (F board, made of cardboard), make sure the finished side is facing down (towards the front), not up. The instruction requires two people for assembly. Two is a bit superfluous--one is really all you need. Another reviewer states that he bought metal dowels to replace the plastic dowels that support the adjustable shelves. While I agree that adjustable shelves are not needed and fixed-shelf bookcases are better, the plastic dowels do the job just fine. If you look at my attached picture, you’ll see that I have loaded plenty of books on the shelves without having the bookcase fall apart. Ultimately, I’m not too happy with this product. If you want a cheap bookcase, IKEA has a comparable white bookshelf for a third of the price which also carries about 30 pounds per shelf and also has cardboard backing. If you want a more decorative, better quality bookcase, don’t buy South Shore.

Would this bookcase be functional if I flipped it on its side and used it as a low, horizontal system rather than the tall, vertical standard? Would it also be possible to stack another on top? (I would attach them with DIY hardware.)

I assume you are not joking.  There are several issues with your plan.  The span of the long sides, now horizontal, would not support much weight like books. Using the shelves as vertical spacer supports would not work well because the shelves are 1/4” shorter than the space. Additionally the top and bottom have different design: and the bottom is unfinished.  I would draw a plan, identify all part sizes, buy the already finished boards, have Home Depot cut them as needed and build it. I have done this many times. Nicer, easier, and likely cheaper.  I hope this helps.

Is the depth of the shelf capable of fitting a fabric storage bin?

It would depend on the size of your fabric storage bin. The interior of the shelves measures just shy of 18" long; 11 1/2 " deep; and 11" tall. I don't like the looks of my fabric storage bins on the shelves because they extend just a tiny bit over the edge and only one would fit on the shelf, leaving space for something else but not another fabric storage bin. Also, the height of the fabric storage bin wastes space. Instead of fabric storage bins, I bought small, narrow trash cans from the dollar store. I can put three on a shelf. I use them to store office odds and ends; sewing and craft supplies; etc. I also bought some plastic drawer units that fit perfectly on the shelves. They come in a variety of drawer sizes. I think the brand name of mine is Sterlite. I bought this shelf because it is narrow and perfectly fits the space where I needed to put it. I then customized the interior. I am very happy with the results. I hope this helps you.

I certainly would not unless you use unattractive brackets at the sides.  The back material is way too thin and attached with brads (tacks), so would not be strong enough to support the whole weight of the cabinet.
