This is the second time I have purchased this model trimmer. My first one was purchased in 2012. I reviewed it on June 13, 2012 after I had used it for a year. My comments are still available on the Home Depot web site. At that time, I rated it 5 stars. This year the motor still was running fine, but the auto line feed had become unreliable due to what I believe was normal wear. I checked what was available to replace it & decided to reorder the exact same model I had. I have used it for a month now & will continue to believe this Toro model is a 5-star edger/trimmer.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Of the edgers I have used over the past 45 years this is my favorite. I have now used this edger for 1 year without any problems. The automatic line feed is great. There is no need to tap the edger on the ground to advance the line. I was somewhat skeptical of the 0.065 line, but it has never broken since I have used it. Having the tilting head with a wheel for supporting it while you are edging is very helpful. Note: The edger is used twice monthly from May through September to maintain the sidewalks and curb on a 70' city lot. There is also a 20' driveway that is edged. The lawn is a combo of St. Augustine and Bermuda. It works well on both.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Junk Ok, I did not have good luck with this product! The first one I bought, the motor would slow to a crawl and then stop in the middle of the job. I made sure the power cord was connected, but it still wouldn't work. After three to four minutes I could get it it going again but it would only work for a few minutes and then do the same thing again. When I converted it to the edging position it wouldn't work at all. Must have been a short. I returned it and got a new one. While assembling the second one, I found I had a defective handle-lock. I've had good luck with Toro in the past but two defective products in a row will steer me to a different company.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Toro Electric trimmer-- just fine for smaller yards I bought this trimmer to replace a similarly-priced model from another brand. I had replaced multiple parts on my old trimmer and decided it was time for something new. I have only used it once, but it trims well and seems plenty powerful for my needs. I especially like the design for pivoting the head and the wheel for edging-- these are both better designs than the previous model. It does seem to go through string at a pretty good pace. Users might want to read up on the auto-feed spool, although it is similar to others I have used before. I have not owned it long enough to speak to durability, but my experience with Toro tells me that it should last just fine.

Rated 1 de 5 de par Heavy, Unbalanced, Difficult to Use The Toro model #51480 is the most difficult-to-use grass trimmer I've ever experienced over some 40 years of trimming and edging. Because of its unusually heavy motor weight, poor balance, unsure edging due to the wheel being affixed to the bendable trimmer guard, I found it to be inferior both as a trimmer and an edger. Edging was especially disappointing: not only was it unsure (difficult to maintain a straight and even cut), but it surprisingly threw grass and dirt into my chest and face. Where simple trimming is concerned, the weight of the electric motor made it difficult to maintain an even cut. I'm returning it to Home Depot. Hope this helps you in your search for a trimmer.

Rated 5 de 5 de par My First Trimmer & It's Great! My husband has a professional expensive gasoline trimmer and it does do a good job. However, I have not and will not attempt to use it for several reasons. I'm a 69 year old lady and like to do things on my own. Now I have my own electric Toro Trimmer. No gasoline to buy, no expensive battery to replace, just plug it in and start trimming. Did the whole front yard the first day and the back yard the second. The edger is the best part and is easy to operate and stay in line. Love it and so glad I made the purchase!

Rated 2 de 5 de par I'm back to disliking TORO products Other reviews/reviewers (my reason for selecting this trimmer) made it sound like a good buy. I was extremely disappointed with the auto-feed feature. It did not work after a half hour nor did the manual feed after 1 hour. It was only used in lawn areas around trees & retaining walls, not tall field grasses. The supplied line also broke in the middle of the reel after the first hour. I discarded the remaining line, cleaned out the reel area, and wound in fresh line. It worked for a while again, but soon renewed my disappointment. It appears that it doesn't take much clippings to render this tool undependable; good for raising your BP, though.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Performs better than expected I had a Craftsman electric trimmer/edger for over 10 years. When it finally went, we decided to purchase a gas powered edger/trimmer. I hated that one! It was awkward to hold and use, the string kept getting stuck and you had to keep stopping and pull the whole thing apart to fix. It was also a pain in the butt to start. Trashed it after one year and bought this Toro Electric trimmer because of previous reviews on it. So far so good...love the auto feed feature, and the edger works really nice. Easy to handle and powerful. Love it!

Can the spool be rewound or do you have to buy prefilled spools? What is the cost of the prefilled spools?

Posée par: Liz
You need to buy the line and hand wrap it onto the spool...not hard to do

Several reviews have stated that auto-feed does not work (or does not work well) when using trimmer in edging mode. My old trimmer was bump-feed. What is causing the problem with auto-feed while edging, and can I do anything to minimize the problem?
Posée par: BumpFeeder
I have the same experience, it does not feed well. I often have to stop to push the button on the bottom part to pull the cord manually.

can this be used as a weed whacker as well as an edger?

Posée par: Grace
Hi Grace, Thanks for asking. Yes, this Toro Trimmer has a pivoting head design that allows you to vertically edge with it as well as trim horizontally with the string head. There is a guide wheel that rolls along the edge to make it easy for you. Travis

what is the meaning of 2 multiple trim lines?

Posée par: gem
The line spool is divided into 2 sections. Wind your 2 lines onto the spool both in the same direction. Look in the manual.

How well does this work around chain link fencing?

Posée par: Nay nay
I have had no problems with this trimmer. It works well around chain link, and I think it is because of the dual string. This is my first dual string trimmer and It performs well around the chain link fence area of my lawn. Does not hang, tangle or use excess line... Very happy with machine.

Why do you sell something which you cannot buy replacement string for at your local store?

Love the trimmer but hate the fact that I have to go to Lovwes to get the replacement string
Posée par: Aj59
I don't buy special string for mine. Years ago, I bought a huge spool of heavy duty, 6 sided string. I have used it on every weedeater I have owned, gas, electric and cordless. Never had any problems! I have tried the little prewrapped spools that are made for each brand, etc. but I feel they are overpriced and don't last long enough anyway. Hope this helps!

A number of reviews indicate trouble with dual-line trimmers getting tangled and/or "melting" within the spool..is this incorrect usage?

Posée par: John
The times it has happened to me, is when the spool was close to being empty.... Not an issue when the spool is fresh or full.... Otherwise it works so great. Very strong with two lines.

stopped working all of a sudden

i followed instructions and kept it clean. but the motor won't turn over at all. any recommendations?
Posée par: please help
How long of an extension cord was used? It probably is covered under warranty, it is a fairly new model. Too long of an extension cord will put an extreme strain on the motor resulting in severe damage internally. It should be looked at by Toro. Many manuals specify acceptable lengths of extension cords by wire guage. These parameters can be found on the internet.
