This rework octagonal box has clamps for nonmetallic sheathed cable (Loomex, NMD90). Wire connections (junction box). Light fixture installation. Swing-arm rework brackets. Max. wall thickness: 3/4 inch. Max. load capacity : 12 lb (5.5 kg) Ideal for shallow space.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from You Need To Know Before You Cut The Hole This was a great idea for a light I needed to put on an existing wall, not being able to attach to a stud. One thing to note - the "ears" stick out beyond the flange of the light I purchased. Solved the problem by cutting a margarine container lid to fit behind the light flange but over the "ears". I t looks fine, but I was lucky the lid and the flange were both white.

For instance I installed 6” motion led lights for a closet. If you don’t check the orientation the motion sensor will not be facing the closet opening.

Shouldn't there be a guideline on the weight it can hold. Isn't the drywall ceiling thickness pretty much standard? I want to install a 7 KG pendant. I want to get the best "Re-Work" electrical box for this purpose. This is the only product I see.

the reason there is no guideline for a weight capacity is because it will be largely dependent on how well it was installed, distance to framing members and thickness of ceiling materials. 1/2 drywall is very common, 5/8 is used typically for a reduction in sound transmission, and increased fire rating and can be installed in more than one layer for additional Benefits. I would not recommend hanging a 7 KG or 15lb pendant on this retro fit box unless it is close enough to a framing member to get in additional screws.

Can this be used in the ceiling without stud? How much weight can it hold?

Yes it can be mounted without a stud. Wall mounted max is 12 lbs, for a ceiling my best guess would be under 5 lbs.

The outside tabs and holes are larger than the standard fixture box on a standard light size I’m trying to use. Going to have to try and tape and mud around it which will be a pain. Not sure what other options I have. For a retro box seems weird.

Hello and thank you for your comments. This box is standard being 4'' , but with the brackets the hole is indeed bigger. The cut-out shows the size of the hole including the brackets, so you can choose the proper light cover. The covers vary in sizes and you can choose the proper one according to your needs. The other option is product 54151CFB-OW, available in the lighting section made to be secured between trust and the hole is 4''. We hope this will information is helpfull for you. Also no mention on the tracing paper to orient the box to match the holes in your fixture box.
