Rated 2 de 5 de par Noisy - Steady hum or drone I installed this a week ago. Installation was pretty simple and unit runs fine. In pure heat pump mode it is slow to heat up the water but this is expected of a heat pump and you can switch to a hybrid or pure electric for more heat. The problem is the noise. It is installed in the basement in a closed room but when it is running there is a low pitched hum that can be heard all through the first floor. Quite annoying.

Rated 2 de 5 de par Much noisier than claimed! We bought this unit a few weeks ago, to replace a gas water heater that was 20 years old. We wanted to move away from gas and the hybrid (heat pump plus electric element) technology offered very high efficiencies. The unit looks good, provides plenty of hot water and comes with a handy app that can be used to control and monitor the unit. The heat pump puts out quite a lot of cool, dehumidified air. This is not an issue for us, as the unit is installed in an unfinished basement. In fact, it might be an advantage, as it will effectively double as a dehumidifier in the summer. I would not recommend installing it in a heated, occupied space however: in Canada we use heating more than air conditioning and most people would not want to run their furnace longer to reheat the cold air coming out of the water heater. The main issue we have with the unit is the noise. According to the technical specifications, it should generate just under 50 decibels (dB), noisier than a fridge, but fairly quiet. When first installed, we measured the sound level at around 70 dB, which is about 10 times louder than promised. In particular, there was a loud hum that could be heard all over the house. We worked with the installer to find a solution to the problem. The manufacturer sent a new fan that significantly reduced the noise from 70 to just below 60 dB. Still well above the specifications for the product, but much better. A little internet research brought up a lot of noise complaints for this product over the last couple of years. It seems that the latest generation (Gen 5) of these hybrid units is a lot noisier than earlier generations, which seems like a step in the wrong direction.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Very efficient and whisper quiet Please note: this review is written 6 weeks after a May 2023 installation. No experience with it in the winter yet. I’m so glad we went with this model. Switching from an oil-fired burner, this water heater is saving us a lot of money. With the rebates available to me, it should pay for itself in only a few years. Past reviews of these hybrid heat pump water heaters always mention noise. It seems it was a big issue with previous generations of this product. But the latest version is super quiet, even when the compressor and fan are running full blast. Ours is installed directly below the main bedroom and we cannot hear it at all upstairs. It will be interesting to see how it performs during the winter, as it’s installed in an unheated basement-level garage. We no longer have residual heat coming from the oil boiler (we now use heat pumps for space heating) so the air surrounding it will be fairly cold. I suspect the heating elements may need to kick in fairly often if demand is high. I’ll see if I can update this review in a year’s time.

Rated 4 de 5 de par So far so good - software needs to improve Installed a month ago. Set the temp to 135deg f, as I don't have any small children in the house. The app keeps nannying me that the temperature is a scald risk... ugh. I have also set (personal preference) the WH to heat pump only, and the app permanently sticks a banner at the top of the page that I need to put it in hybrid mode for max efficiency. I am now stuck with two stacked permanent banners telling me about how I'm using it wrong. That said, the WH works fine - took about half a day to initially get the water up to temp, and has then been fine, App looks to be under reporting energy use. I have installed an emporia energy monitor and it consistently reads higher than the app reporting - will circle back once I confirm the overall accuracy on emporia with my utility bill. Who knew saving electricity would be so complicated?

Rated 5 de 5 de par Lower power bills Lowered my power bills pretty considerably. Did it as part of my eco audits and got half it back almost and with the lower power bill, it should pay for its self in about a year, so theres a big win

Rated 1 de 5 de par High Hopes, but big disappointments. Had very high hopes for this unit. Easy install, and we really don’t hear the noise. Guess it depends where you install it. Replaced a 50gal electric just to save some $. Went up to this 65 so we could rely less on electric and use heat pump more. After install and heated to full started running out of hot water frequently. Spent a few hours on the phone with Rheem Hybrid (not the number that’s in the manual, but the one they give you after you have been on hold for a while). They sent parts twice which were install, they say the unit is running correctly now. But we are still frequently running out of hot water and only 3 people in the house right now. Changed it from Energy Saver Mode to High Demand Mode and increased the temp to 130 on suggestions from Rheem and that decreases the efficiency significantly. Issue is, we are still frequently running out of hot water. Seems like it only has a 25 gallon tank or something. Hot was full (showing on app) daughter just had a bath (only water used, standard size bath) and it shows empty now. Checked in test mode and it shows upper element temperature of 76, lower of 58. Don’t understand how it can run out so quickly, but it’s not useable. Would really like the efficiency, but unfortunately will be putting this back in the box and returning. If Rheem has a solution, would love to hear it.

Rated 2 de 5 de par May be saving electricity but a royal pain. Once the safety switch thinks there is a leak it will keep beeping. The rope part for it is out of stock for months. Which means I have to walk over 3 floors to manually disable - EVERY 24 hours. It’s been going on for over a month. The plumbing contractor won’t do anything because Rheem apparently asked him to test it for a while. We live on an island where this is a pain as the plumber who supplied is on another island. Avoid it. I wanted to be as environmentally friendly technology as possible but avoid this not for heat pump but parts.

Rated 5 de 5 de par Hybrid 65 Gallon Electric Water Heater I bought the Hybrid 65 gallon water heater unit a couple of years ago and had it installed in my downstairs mechanical storage hallway area. I’ve found the unit reliable and it so far seems to work trouble free and great. For me - it seemed like a risk to make a change over from a traditional water heater to a more complex Hybrid but I figured the unit would help with the humidity in my house particularly during the winter months and it has. Does it get cold where it’s installed next to the furnace - sure does however my installer put a vent in the lower section of my furnace air intake so it draws the cold air in particularly during the winter when my furnace runs. Downside is the coolness from the heat pump and the small amount of fan noise. Was it worth making the change from traditional to Hybrid - I think so - however only time tells.

In the winter when it's -20C outside this water heater takes the air I am paying to heat with my furnace and puts it into the water and then claims it's energy efficient? Why not heat the water directly? If it used outdoor air I could see this working.

Posée par: Skeptical
It really depends on what you use to heat your house. ASHPs are very efficient and use residual heat from your basement that you likely aren't using unless you use the basement as living space. Also, very good if you are using low cost fuel like natural gas or ASHP to heat your house. I have one and am using ASHP until -15c and then propane. Water heater costs stay low all year long. Get one size bigger than you normally need and give it lots of air flow
